What's the problem?
Sometimes, legislators think that the best way to prevent progress is to pass laws that criminalize the teaching of certain subjects in public schools. It's good old book burning, but in 2022.
What are we going to do about it?
We're going to collect information and resources about the subjects they ban, right here. And we're going to make it very easy to share that information. So even if they win some legal battle to suppress a subject, students can easily find the full story, and tell their friends about it, via this website.
Is this partisan politics?
No.... Although.... let's face it, it's mostly Republicans who are banning information. But if Democrats start doing it too, we'll expose those subjects here as well.
Why is this site called WontTeachYou.com?
It's a collection of whatever they won't teach you. Eventually, we're going to make a subdomain for each state. For example, if you live in Florida, you'll be able to go to florida.wontteachyou.com to find whatever Ron DeSantis doesn't want you to know.
How did this start?
In early 2022, Florida's Senate passed a bill that would effectively prevent teachers from teaching or talking about sexual orientation. That was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for this queer author, and made me want to build this site. But recently we've seen a wave of this sort of legalized information suppression. For example, we've seen a recent onslaught of laws and bills preventing teaching of critical race theory (despite the fact that CRT is a law-school subject that has never been taught in high school or lower). For years now we've seen laws enforcing abstinence-only sex education. And the teaching of the civil war and slavery has always been sugar-coated.
America's teachers shouldn't have to put their careers at risk to give students the full story they need, so until they can legally teach this stuff, we'll pick up where they are forced to leave off.
